DPR to Lend an Ear to Aspirations from 27 August Protest

House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani has stressed that the DPR is ready to receive aspirations from various elements of society and has urged demonstrators to maintain order, following plans for a protest on 27 August 2026 in front of the parliament complex in Jakarta.

Puan expressed hope that the demonstration would not descend into unrest. She said it would be better if protesters also helped maintain order so that the delivery of their aspirations could proceed smoothly.

“So, participation from the public, if they wish to state their input and express their aspirations, will of course be received at the DPR building,” Puan said in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday (26/8).

Puan confirmed that the DPR would be open to members of the public who wish to convey their aspirations. On Wednesday itself, she said, DPR leaders, leaders of the council’s auxiliary bodies (AKD), and commission chairs took turns meeting with members of the public who wished to hold audiences.

“DPR leaders can certainly meet with demonstrators. Today, DPR leaders also met with representatives of the public who wished to meet,” she said.

One example, she said, was Commission III of the DPR receiving input from a number of academics regarding the drafting of the Bill on Asset Forfeiture.

In addition, Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad also received an audience from representatives of honorary teachers belonging to the Forum for Advocacy of Non-Civil Servant Teachers in State Schools (Fagri), and employees of PT Pos Indonesia to push for certainty over delayed salary payments.

“We take turns meeting members of the public who wish to meet,” Puan said.

Previously, the Pati United Community Alliance (AMPB) stressed that the rally to be held in front of the DPR building in Jakarta on Thursday (27/8) would be peaceful and focused on two demands related to eradicating corruption.

AMPB coordinator Supriyono, also known as Botok, said the two demands were the immediate passage of the Asset Forfeiture Bill and the application of the death penalty for corruptors. “We have no intention of causing trouble in Jakarta. We support the movement of our friends in Greater Jakarta who will hold the 27 August rally,” Botok said when met in Jakarta on Wednesday.
