House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani stated that communications among political party elites on discussions for revising Law Number 7 of 2017 on General Elections are not conducted in secret. Although the DPR has not yet officially discussed the substance of the changes to the Election Law, Puan emphasised that the parties in Senayan are not remaining idle.

“Political communications continue to be carried out within the political parties and they are not done in secret. Communications, by nature, can be conducted formally and informally, but political communications are always carried out,” said Puan on Tuesday, 21 April 2026.

The PDIP politician confirmed that the revision of the Election Law has a deadline. However, she placed greater emphasis on the expected outcomes of the revision, which should drive improvements in the quality of democracy.

“The main spirit is to ensure that the elections can run honestly, fairly, and properly afterwards. The democratic spirit must remain without harming the nation and state,” said Puan.

The last discussion on revising the Election Law was held by Commission II of the DPR on 10 March. At that time, the DPR presented former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mohammad Mahfud Mahfud MD, as well as Jimly Asshiddiqie.

Member of Commission II of the DPR, Ahmad Doli Kurnia Tandjung, stated that the discussion of the Election Bill should have been held on Monday, 13 April 2026. The Golkar Party politician admitted he did not know the reason for the postponement of the Commission II DPR agenda, which was scheduled to hold an internal meeting to hear a presentation from the House Expertise Agency or BKD.

According to him, the discussion on revising the Election Law is a very important matter considering the approaching election schedule. For example, he mentioned the Constitutional Court decision related to several election issues. In particular, said Doli, Decision Number 135 which separates the conduct of elections.

That decision, according to him, has received pro and contra responses from the public, so it must be immediately addressed by completing the discussion on revising the Election Law. Doli hopes that party leaders, DPR leadership, and factions can take a progressive stance in discussing this revision to the Election Law to ensure legal certainty in the democratic festivities. “If this is done at the beginning of 2027, I think it’s not just tight anymore, but already very late,” said Doli at the DPR, MPR, and DPD Complex on Wednesday, 15 April 2026.
