DPR Speaker on Andrie Yunus Trial: Ensure a Fair Process
House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani has called for the legal proceedings against the perpetrators of the acid attack on KontraS activist Andrie Yunus to be conducted transparently and objectively. Ahead of the first trial at the Military Court II-08 Jakarta next week, Puan reminded that it should be carried out fairly. “Provide a process that is fair and as fair as possible,” said the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle politician at the DPR Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday, 16 April 2026. Head of Military Court II-08 Jakarta Colonel Fredy Ferdian Isnartanto stated that the inaugural hearing for Andrie’s case will be held on Wednesday, 29 April 2026, with the agenda of reading the indictment. The trial will be open to the public as it does not involve morality, children, or state secrets. He mentioned that the judges who will comprise the panel in the trial have not yet been determined. They will use the Supreme Court’s “Smart Majelis” system to select the judges for the case randomly or systematically. Andrie Yunus was doused with corrosive chemical liquid on 12 March while passing through Jalan Salemba I-Talang, Central Jakarta. Medical records indicate that the KontraS Deputy Coordinator suffered burns over more than 20 percent of his body. The Military Police Centre identified four perpetrators of the attack as members of the TNI’s Strategic Intelligence Agency (Bais). They are NDP, SL, BHW, and ES, from the air and naval forces. NDP holds the rank of captain, SL and BHW are first lieutenants, while ES is a second sergeant. Head of Military Auditor II-07 Jakarta Colonel Corps of Law (Chk) Andri Wijaya revealed that the motive for the attack was due to personal grudges against the victim. “Up to now, what we have explored through examination records is that the motive of the defendants is still personal grudges against Mr AY,” said Andri in a press conference at Military Court II-08 Jakarta on Thursday.
