House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani stated that discussions on the revision of Law Number 7 of 2017 on General Elections, or the Election Bill, are still at the level of party elites. Puan’s statement comes amid the slow legislative process in the House, which has yet to address the Election Law.

“We are still discussing it with the chairmen of political parties,” said the Chair of the Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle at the House complex in Jakarta on Thursday, 16 April 2026.

According to the former Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, the discussion of the Election Law revision must be pursued transparently to achieve optimal results.

“The most important thing is how, in the end, the election process can run honestly, fairly, efficiently, and of course bring good benefits to the nation and state,” said the daughter of PDIP General Chair Megawati Soekarnoputri.

The last discussion on the Election Law revision was held by House Commission II on 10 March. At that time, the House brought in former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mohammad Mahfud Mahmodin, as well as Jimly Asshidiqqie.

Member of House Commission II Ahmad Doli Kurnia Tandjung stated that the discussion of the Election Bill should have been held on Monday, 13 April 2026. The Golkar Party politician claimed not to know the reason for the postponement of the Commission II agenda, which was scheduled to hold an internal meeting to hear a presentation from the House Expert Body or BKD.

According to him, the discussion of the Election Law revision is extremely important considering the approaching election schedule. For example, he mentioned the Constitutional Court ruling related to several electoral issues. In particular, Doli said, Ruling Number 135 which separates the conduct of elections.

That ruling, according to him, has received pro and contra responses from the public, so it must be immediately addressed by completing the discussion of the Election Law revision. Doli hopes that party leaders and the House along with factions can take a progressive stance in discussing this Election Law revision to ensure legal certainty in the democratic festivities.

“If this is done at the beginning of 2027, I think it’s not just tight, but already very late,” said Doli at the House, MPR, and DPD complex on Wednesday, 15 April 2026.
