DPR Speaker: All Parties Need to Maintain Unity Despite Differences in Eid Timing
Jakarta (ANTARA) - House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani has called on all parties to maintain unity and foster tolerance despite differences in the timing of Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah/2026 CE observance.
“Let us strengthen our unity and bolster the spirit of mutual cooperation to build a better Indonesia,” Puan said in Jakarta on Friday.
As is known, the government has officially set Eid al-Fitr 1 Syawal 1447 Hijriah or Lebaran 2026 for Saturday (21/3). Meanwhile, the Muhammadiyah Muslim community has determined that the start of the month of Syawal 1447 H falls on this Friday.
In addition, she invited all Indonesian people to strengthen care and unity.
“In this Eid al-Fitr moment, let us enhance our empathy towards fellow citizens, especially those who are lacking and in need,” she said.
She also stated that acts of care are very important, especially as the world is currently facing various geopolitical dynamics that affect global economic stability, including Indonesia’s economy.
For this reason, she also encouraged the government to be increasingly sensitive in advocating for the people’s welfare.
“The people continue to place great hope in the state to be present, especially in moments when the people need it most,” she said.
Previously, the government through the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) officially set Eid al-Fitr 1 Syawal 1447 Hijriah to fall on Saturday 21 March 2026. On the other hand, various schools of thought have determined that Eid al-Fitr 1447 H will be observed on Friday, 20 March 2026, including Muhammadiyah.
“Based on calculation and the absence of the crescent moon being sighted, it was agreed that 1 Syawal 1447 Hijriah falls on Saturday 21 March 2026,” said Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar during a press conference for the Isbat Session for 1 Syawal 1447 Hijriah at the Kemenag office in Jakarta on Thursday (19/3).
The Minister explained that the decision was made following the results of the moon sighting conducted by the Kemenag’s Hisab Rukyat Team, which indicated that the crescent moon’s height across all regions of Indonesia did not yet meet the criteria set by the Ministers of Religious Affairs of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore (MABIMS).
