DPR seeks psychologists' involvement in education system

In a statement quoted on Wednesday, she underlined that the involvement of professionals like psychologists and counselors is crucial to support students’ character building, both in academic and personal character.

She affirmed that Commission X is still studying the possibility of including the role of counselors and psychologists as educators in the national education system.

This step, she continued, is aimed at providing a stronger legal basis for these professionals in supporting the education process at schools.

The legislator explained that the concept of an educator within the system is not limited to classroom teachers; it also encompasses various support staff who play a vital role in guiding student development.

In addition to paving the way for psychologists’ involvement, she noted that the revision will address various other issues, such as inclusive education, school violence prevention, and the strengthening of protection for all parties within the educational environment.

Sjaifudian noted that the revision is expected to optimize the contribution of psychologists in addressing student issues, particularly those related to mental health.

“We want to use this momentum to resolve mental health issues,” she asserted.

The DPR is currently drafting the National Education System Bill to revise Law Number 20 of 2003 on the National Education System, aimed at refining the previous legislation through a codification approach, which consolidates various education regulations into a single legal umbrella.

These include the Law on Higher Education, the Law on Teachers and Lecturers, and the Law on Islamic Boarding Schools.
