DPR Receives Student Protesters for Audience at Parliament
The leadership of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI) received an audience with several student representatives who had been holding protests in front of the parliamentary complex on Jalan Gatot Subroto, Jakarta, since Friday evening.
Several DPR leaders present for the audience included the Deputy Speaker of the DPR RI, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, and the Deputy Speaker of the DPR RI, Saan Mustopa. The student representatives were received in the Abdul Muis Room, located within the Nusantara Building, also known as the ‘turtle building’.
“We will wait to see what they have to convey,” said Saan Mustopa before entering the audience room.
The protesters represented institutions including Trisakti University, Esa Unggul University, Mercu Buana University, and the Islamic Student Association (HMI). The students were granted entry to the DPR building at approximately 17:45 WIB.
In addition to the DPR leadership, several members of the House accompanied the meeting, including the Chairman of Commission III of the DPR RI, Habiburokhman; the Deputy Chairman of Commission III, Rano Alfath; and the Chairman of the House Ethics Council, Nazaruddin Dek Gam.
The students’ primary demands included:
Restoring the Economy and Politics: Urging a reduction in the prices of basic commodities and fuel, as well as halting all forms of State Budget (APBN) waste.
Eradicating Official Incompetence: Demanding a total evaluation of problematic programmes and improving government public communication.
Restoring Civil Supremacy: Firmly rejecting the Police Law, halting the repressiveness of authorities in the civilian sphere, and rejecting National Strategic Projects (PSN) that infringe upon people’s rights.
