Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Sufmi Dasco Ahmad stated that the DPR has received the aspirations of students who staged a demonstration at the parliament complex in Jakarta on Friday and will convey them to the government. According to him, the student representatives who participated in the audience came from Trisakti University, Mercu Buana University, Esa Unggul University, and the Islamic Students Association (HMI). “In essence, they conveyed their aspirations to be forwarded to the government and to the DPR in the context of the DPR’s oversight function,” Dasco said at the parliament complex, Jakarta, Friday. He said communication between the DPR and the student representatives went well during the audience, which began around 18.00 WIB and ended at 19.10 WIB. Dasco also committed to opening wider communication channels with student groups in the future. “We will communicate more with students going forward,” he stated. Meanwhile, Trisakti University Student President Dhenni Ribowo said the audience had provided answers to some of the demands raised, although several issues still need to be addressed. According to him, students conveyed a number of demands, including those related to the scarcity of subsidised fuel oil (BBM) which has impacted the rise in staple food prices, as well as the importance of maintaining economic stability. He cautioned that the economic situation should not further burden the public, as it could potentially trigger a larger wave of protests. “We hope to await the promises in the coming time so we can reap the results,” Dhenni said.
