The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has approved two bills ratifying defence cooperation agreements with Malaysia and Turkey into law during a plenary session in Jakarta on Tuesday (21/7/2026). The approval was granted unanimously by all parliamentary factions.

Deputy Speaker of Commission I of the DPR, Anton Sukartono, stated that the deliberation process began after the DPR received two presidential letters. It continued with a public hearing involving academics and experts on 17 June 2026, followed by consultations with the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ministry of Law on 22 June 2026.

All factions assessed that the defence cooperation with the Government of Malaysia and the Republic of Turkey holds significant strategic value for strengthening geopolitical stability, facilitating the transfer of defence industry technology, and improving military human resource capacity. Consequently, it was agreed to proceed to the final decision-making stage in the plenary session.

Anton stressed the importance of the DPR’s oversight function and the need for measured, effective, and sustainable budget support to ensure the law’s implementation runs effectively. He noted that strong funding is essential to meet commitments on time, including financing strategic plans to enhance defence human resources through binding and comprehensive joint training.

DPR Speaker Puan Maharani then sought the approval of the attending members for both bills, which was granted unanimously.
