REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Deputy Chair of Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Syaiful Huda, has proposed that the government impose limits on the use of motorcycles as a means of mudik for Lebaran 2026. This follows concerns over the high number of accidents involving two‑wheeled vehicles in recent years.

Huda said that, based on historical data from 2022 to 2025, the two‑wheeled transport sector contributed the most significant accident figures during the mudik period. ‘The accident rate during mudik is very high, with 75.9 percent of accidents experienced by mudik travellers riding motorcycles,’ he said at a discussion in the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (5/3/2026).

The PKB politician revealed that the restriction is not a total ban. Instead, it would shift the burden of motorbike mudik travellers to safer modes of transport. According to him, the number of mudik accidents is very large and harms the state. ‘This figure equates to 179,566 mudik travellers,’ Huda said.

He also urged the Ministry of Transport (Kemenhub) to immediately study the scheme before the mudik period arrives. ‘I use the phrase “restricted” by converting it. Once we can facilitate motorcyclists to free public transport (bus or train), it will automatically reduce the potential for accidents,’ he added.

Huda noted that the restriction would be prioritised for families travelling with children and wives who are using a single motorcycle due to the safety risk being very low. In addition to vehicle factors, he added, the demographics of accidents also threaten the nation’s future.
