DPR: Prabowo's Korea dialogue initiative aligns with free and active foreign policy
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission I, Dave Laksono, has assessed that President Prabowo Subianto’s proposal to bridge dialogue between South Korea and North Korea aligns with Indonesia’s free and active foreign policy. According to him, the statement of readiness from Prabowo to help open a space for dialogue reflects Indonesia’s commitment to continue playing a role in supporting the creation of world peace. “As long as it is based on national interests, the principle of a free and active foreign policy, and respect for the sovereignty of every country, Indonesia’s contribution will remain relevant in strengthening regional and global stability,” Dave said in Jakarta on Monday. He added that this trust is a valuable diplomatic asset and must be maintained through consistency in foreign policy that prioritises respect for state sovereignty, peaceful dispute resolution, and mutually respectful cooperation. However, he noted that this should be understood as a form of readiness should the parties request it, not as an announcement regarding the execution of a diplomatic mission. Therefore, he assessed that any subsequent steps must still be pursued through official intergovernmental communication, taking into account regional dynamics and Indonesia’s national interests. He expressed confidence that with its diplomatic track record, Indonesia can continue to play a constructive role as a trusted partner in encouraging the peaceful resolution of various international issues. Previously, President Prabowo Subianto revealed that the South Korean President had asked him to help open a line of dialogue with North Korea. According to President Prabowo, the request reflects the world’s trust in Indonesia as a country that consistently implements a free and active, non-bloc foreign policy. “The South Korean President asked me if I could visit North Korea to open some kind of dialogue,” President Prabowo stated during a meeting with the national and regional Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) at the State Palace, Jakarta, on Friday (31/7).
