DPR Plenary Appoints Nuzran Joher as Ombudsman Chairman
The second plenary session of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) for the first sitting period of 2026-2027 formally appointed Nuzran Joher as Chairman of the Ombudsman of the Republic of Indonesia for the 2026-2031 term, replacing Hery Susanto, on Tuesday (18/8).
Hery was previously dishonourably discharged after being named a suspect in an alleged bribery case.
“We now request the approval of the parliamentary factions: can the appointment of the Chairman of the Ombudsman of the Republic of Indonesia be approved?” said Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, who presided over the plenary session, to which the participants responded with approval.
Dasco explained that Nuzran’s appointment referred to the letter from the leadership of Commission II of the DPR, Number B/45 dated 30 July, concerning the nomination of the Chairman of the Ombudsman of the Republic of Indonesia for the 2026-2031 term.
The letter was subsequently discussed in a consultation meeting replacing the Deliberative Body (Bamus) meeting of the DPR on 18 August 2026, before being brought to the plenary session for the DPR’s approval.
Hery was previously indicted for accepting bribes totalling Rp4.85 billion in a corruption case concerning nickel mining governance in Southeast Sulawesi for the 2013-2025 period.
For his actions, Hery was charged with violating Article 12 letter a or Article 12 letter b in conjunction with Article 18 of the Corruption Eradication Law, in conjunction with Article 2 paragraph 8 of Appendix 1 Point 28 of Law Number 1 of 2026 on Criminal Adjustments.
Alternatively, he was charged under Article 5 paragraph 2 in conjunction with Article 18 of the Corruption Eradication Law, in conjunction with Article 2 paragraph 8 of Appendix 1 Point 28 of the Criminal Adjustments Law. Or, fourthly, under Article 606 paragraph 2 of the National Criminal Code in conjunction with Article VII point 49 of the Criminal Adjustments Law, in conjunction with Article 18 of the Corruption Eradication Law.
