DPR pledges to improve teacher welfare after status reform
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Chairman of Commission X of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Lalu Hadrian Irfani, stated that the DPR is committed to improving teacher welfare after the government and parliament agreed on reforms to teachers’ employment status.
Speaking at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Wednesday, Lalu said that welfare improvements would be the next step after the government and DPR reform the employment status of teachers.
“So we will fix the cluster first, and the next step will be to improve their welfare,” Lalu said.
He welcomed the plan to appoint teachers with part-time Government Employee with Work Agreement (PPPK) status to full-time positions, while full-time PPPK teachers will be given the opportunity to take part in civil servant (PNS) selection.
According to him, the DPR and the government continue to formulate policies to improve teacher welfare while taking fiscal conditions into account.
He expressed confidence that the government will improve teacher welfare as fiscal conditions gradually recover.
In addition, Lalu explained that the selection process for full-time PPPK teachers to become civil servants is necessary to recruit quality and competent teachers and to align them with the needs of each region.
“We will jointly oversee this and maintain a conducive atmosphere so that the transition of the teacher cluster or status can proceed smoothly. God willing, it will begin in early 2027,” he said.
He urged teachers not to be anxious about the changes and to remain focused on teaching in order to prepare the nation’s children for a better future.
“Because this status will also become central government employees, the formation, transfers, promotions, and so on will of course be managed and regulated by the central government. The implementation and technical guidelines are currently being drafted,” he said.
Previously, Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said that the employment status of PPPK teachers would be transferred to central government employees.
According to Prasetyo, the policy was agreed upon in a meeting between the government and the DPR and has taken fiscal conditions into account.
“We agreed together that the employment status will be transferred to central employees or central government employees,” Prasetyo said after a meeting with the DPR at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Tuesday (18/8).
He said that part-time PPPK teachers will be appointed as full-time PPPK teachers. Meanwhile, teachers who currently hold full-time PPPK status will have the opportunity to take part in the civil servant selection process in 2027.
Minister of State Apparatus Empowerment and Bureaucratic Reform Rini Widyantini previously stated that there are 955,245 teachers with PPPK status, of whom 231,246 are part-time PPPK teachers.
