DPR Passes Revised Police Law, Sahroni Confident in Greater Professionalism

Deputy Chairman of House Commission III, Ahmad Sahroni, has endorsed the ratification of the Polri Bill into law. Sahroni believes the regulation is a positive step towards encouraging the police force to become more professional. “This is a good step for the Polri to be more professional in the future, to be more protective and serve the public without discrimination,” Sahroni told reporters on Tuesday. The NasDem Party politician stated that the challenges facing the police are not easy. Therefore, he hopes the force will become more sensitive to the various issues faced by the public. “This is heavy work ahead; the Polri must be truly sensitive to the problems occurring in society,” he said. Sahroni is also confident that the police can become more professional following the ratification of the revision. However, he admitted that this effort requires hard work from all ranks of the police force. “They must be professional. This is heavy work ahead, and though it is not easy, with this extension of time, the Polri will get better and continue to improve,” he stated. The DPR officially ratified the revision of the Polri Law today. The ratification took place during a plenary meeting. Deputy Minister of Law, Eddy Hiariej, explained that the discussion on the revision was relatively brief because the substance being amended was limited. He stated that the discussion only covered around 20 existing and new substantive points grouped into seven main materials. “So, the reason the discussion of this Polri Bill was not very long is that there are only 20 existing and new substantive points under discussion. There are 7 discussion materials,” Eddy said after the plenary meeting for the ratification at the parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday. Some of the matters regulated include the Polri’s duties in supporting the government’s strategic policies, affirmations for persons with disabilities in police recruitment based on special skills, social security, and the retirement age limit. The law revision also regulates the assignment of police personnel outside the police institution. Eddy stated that this provision refers to the Polri’s function as stipulated in Article 30 paragraph (4) of the 1945 Constitution, which is to maintain security and public order, provide protection and services to the public, and enforce the law.
