DPR Opens Session with Prabowo Present, Puan Highlights Layoffs, BPJS, and Asset Forfeiture Bill

House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani officially opened the First Session of the 2026–2027 Sitting Year at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Friday, with President Prabowo Subianto in attendance. The session marks the beginning of the third year of the DPR’s 2024–2029 term.

In her opening speech, Puan emphasised the DPR’s commitment to improving the quality of legislation and ensuring policies benefit the people. She noted that the DPR has passed 28 bills into law since the start of its term. The legislative agenda for this session includes the deliberation of 14 bills at the first level and the continued drafting of 43 other bills, including the crucial Asset Forfeiture Bill.

Puan stated that the Asset Forfeiture Bill is currently focused on absorbing meaningful public participation to strengthen its substance and ensure strong social legitimacy. She stressed that the quality of a law is not measured by the speed of its enactment but by the tangible benefits it delivers to the public without creating overlapping authority.

Beyond legislation, the Speaker highlighted several strategic issues under DPR oversight, including the threat of mass layoffs, access to the national health insurance scheme (BPJS Kesehatan), and the evaluation of education budget governance. The DPR will also focus on parliamentary diplomacy to support Indonesia’s foreign policy and address environmental concerns such as forest and land fire anticipation during the prolonged dry season.
