Jakarta (ANTARA) - Member of the House of Representatives Commission VI Ahmad Labib has urged the upper-middle class to support the government’s energy resilience policies by refraining from switching to subsidised fuel oil (BBM).

According to him, this step is crucial to maintain the accuracy of subsidy targeting so that it truly benefits those in need.

“In line with the appeal from the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources for the upper-middle class not to switch to subsidised BBM. This step is important to keep subsidised BBM on target while preventing potential surges in consumption that could burden the state budget,” Ahmad stated in Jakarta on Thursday.

He said the key to sustaining national energy policies lies in synergy between the government, the House of Representatives, and all elements of society.

With directed policies and collective support, he believes energy stability can sustain national economic growth momentum while strengthening Indonesia’s resilience against global crises.

Ahmad supports the government’s policy to maintain the stability of subsidised BBM prices in 2026 as an effort to protect people’s purchasing power and curb inflation.

“This policy serves as an important buffer for the national economy, particularly in maintaining stability in logistics and production costs that heavily depend on energy,” he explained.

He noted that this achievement is seen as concrete evidence of the government’s success in maintaining national energy stability, supported by the dominance of domestic energy sources such as coal at 48 percent, gas at 22 percent, and contributions from renewable energy, plus a relatively low import dependency rate.

This success, he said, is inseparable from the hard work of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in ensuring a secure energy supply amid global pressures.

“The government’s strategic steps in maintaining energy stocks, strengthening supply chains, and managing import dynamics form an important foundation in bolstering national energy resilience,” Ahmad stated.

The government has assured that subsidised fuel oil (BBM) prices will not increase until the end of 2026.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia stated on Friday (17/4) that this decision follows directives from President Prabowo Subianto after visits to Russia and France.

Bahlil emphasised that the stability of subsidised BBM prices remains aligned with the maintained condition of the national energy supply.
