DPR Member Urges Police to Understand Implementation of New Criminal Code

A member of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Abdullah, has urged the Indonesian National Police (Polri) to strengthen the understanding of all its personnel regarding the implementation of the new Criminal Code (KUHP) and Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP) as part of the national criminal justice system reform. “The spirit of reform in the KUHP and KUHAP must be truly understood and internalised by every Polri member. Law enforcement that upholds legal certainty, equality before the law, and a sense of justice is the main foundation for presenting a police force that is closer, trusted, and serves the people,” Abdullah said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

According to him, building a humanistic police force is not enough through persuasive approaches to the community alone, but must also be supported by a good understanding of the legal provisions that form the basis of police duties. Furthermore, Abdullah assessed that professionalism and a humanistic approach need to be supported by improving the welfare of Polri members, who carry out high-risk duties daily and bear great responsibility in maintaining public security. He stated that the welfare of police personnel is not merely an economic issue, but an investment to strengthen institutional integrity.

According to him, personnel whose basic needs are met will be more focused on carrying out their duties professionally, resistant to temptations of misconduct, and optimal in providing services to the community. Abdullah also emphasised the importance of firmness in the guidance and disciplinary enforcement against members who commit violations. He said that firm action against errant individuals is part of the effort to maintain the honour and dignity of the Polri institution. “The majority of Polri members have served well, so the institution’s good name must be safeguarded with the courage to act against any violation fairly and transparently,” he said. He expressed hope that Polri will continue to carry out internal improvements and increasingly gain public trust through fair service and law enforcement. “I wish a happy 80th Bhayangkara Day to the entire Polri family. I pray that Polri becomes more humanistic in serving the community and that the welfare of its members improves as they carry out their duties to maintain security and uphold the law,” Abdullah said.
