Jakarta (ANTARA) — Bias Layar, a member of Commission XIII of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), has urged the police to thoroughly investigate an alleged mob attack that led to the death of a resident in Tabanan Regency, Bali, as an effort to ensure legal certainty and prevent a recurrence of vigilante justice.

In a written statement received in Jakarta on Tuesday, Bias Layar said the incident, allegedly stemming from an accusation of chicken theft, was a human tragedy that could not be regarded as an ordinary event.

“As a nation that upholds the rule of law and human rights, we must not tolerate mob justice in any form. If someone is suspected of committing a crime, the legal process must be the path to resolution, not violence that takes away a person’s right to life,” said Bias Layar.

According to him, every alleged criminal act must be resolved through legal mechanisms, not violence. He emphasised that the right to life is a fundamental right guaranteed by the constitution, so there is no justification for violent actions that result in the loss of someone’s life.

He therefore asked the Indonesian National Police (Polri) to handle the case professionally, transparently, and objectively, and to prosecute anyone proven to be involved in accordance with the law.

“The state must be present to provide legal certainty. Anyone proven to have committed a crime must be held accountable under the applicable law. There must be no impunity for perpetrators of violence,” he said.

Beyond law enforcement, Bias Layar urged the Ministry of Human Rights and victim protection agencies to provide psychological and social support as well as legal assistance to the victim’s family, especially the children and wife affected.

He said the handling of the case should prioritise the protection of victims’ rights while strengthening public awareness so that legal disputes are not resolved through violent actions.

“We must uphold the values of humanity, justice, and the supremacy of law. No one should lose their right to life at the hands of a mob. Indonesia is a state governed by law, not a state that condones violence as a form of justice,” said Bias Layar.
