Syamsu Rizal, a member of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), said he supports President Prabowo Subianto, who is reported to be planning to evaluate Indonesia’s membership in the Board of Peace (BoP). He argued that the move is appropriate following the United States, the BoP’s architect, launching attacks on Iran. ‘Indonesia’s membership in international forums must align with the constitutional mandate and commitment to world peace. If an institution is no longer consistent with its mandate, a comprehensive evaluation is necessary,’ Rizal said in a statement on Friday (6 March 2026). ‘The Israeli and United States attacks on Iran have seriously weakened the Board of Peace and worsened its image as the leading guardian of global peace,’ Rizal added. Moreover, the US attack on Iran, which killed its top leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is not justifiable. He emphasised that the attack contradicts the basic principles of peace and global stability. ‘The world needs de-escalation, dialogue, and respect for international law, not unilateral actions that further muddy the situation,’ Rizal said. This was conveyed by Prabowo during a meeting with the current and former presidents, former foreign minister, the general secretary of a political party, and ministers from the Red and White Cabinet at Istana Merdeka, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (3 March 2026). ‘Yes, (the President stated ready to evaluate), given the latest developments, it must indeed be evaluated,’ former Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda said after the 3.5-hour meeting on Tuesday night. He also revealed that Prabowo does not ignore calls from the public asking Indonesia to leave the BoP. The option to withdraw from membership is even among the topics under discussion if the Board of Peace does not carry out its mandate.
