Natural disasters are indeed a natural phenomenon or sunnatullah. However, reducing the risk of disasters through efforts that favour environmental sustainability is an endeavour we must undertake together.

Pamekasan (ANTARA) - Ansari, a member of Commission VIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) from Electoral District XI of East Java, has stressed the importance of carrying out mitigation and increasing awareness about disaster management as an effort to reduce risks when disasters occur.

“Mitigation measures do not always require large steps, but can begin with the habit of protecting the environment in residential areas,” said Ansari while attending a Socialisation of Strengthening Resilience Against Disasters and Climate Change at the Local Level event in Pamekasan, East Java, on Monday.

Small matters such as environmental cleanliness and the establishment of green open spaces were highlighted by the DPR RI member from Pamekasan Regency.

According to Ansari, cross-sector cooperation through a multi-stakeholder approach is important so that systemic and integrated handling can be carried out.

“Natural disasters are indeed a natural phenomenon or sunnatullah. However, reducing the risk of disasters through efforts that favour environmental sustainability is an endeavour we must undertake together,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nadhirah Seha Nur, Director of Disaster Management Strategy Development at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), emphasised the importance of cross-sector collaboration as well as regular disaster simulation education for residents.

“Mitigation and training must continue to be improved, because sensitivity in efforts to deal with disasters will arise through intensive training,” she said.
