DPR Member Reveals Target for Electoral Law Revision to Become Law by End-2026
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Member of the DPR’s Commission II, Mardani Ali Sera, revealed that Commission II aims to have the revision of the 2017 Election Law No. 7 enacted by the end of 2026. Accordingly, since January 2026 Commission II has been holding public hearings (RDPU) to receive input from various parties regarding the revision of the Election Law. ‘The target is, by the end of 2026, the new Election Law will be enacted,’ Mardani said during a public discussion themed ‘Preventing Pragmatism and Stagnation in the Revision of the Election Law’, cited from Perludem’s YouTube broadcast, Wednesday (20/5/2026). ‘We are gathering broad aspirations; May 2026 is ongoing. So every Tuesday the aim is RDPU for the Election Law,’ he added. Subsequently, Commission II targets formal consideration of the revision of the Election Law at the working-level committee (panja) stage in July to August 2026. He also stated there are five main priorities for Commission II in revising the Election Law. First, the design of election synchronisation. ‘Third: the legislative electoral system, open, closed, or mixed,’ he said. ‘Fourth is integrity and anti-money politics. Finally, codification and the institutional framework of the election administration.’ ‘Those are the points compiled by experts; number three. Number two is actually the implications of the Constitutional Court (MK) ruling, so there are four tracks: current norms, norms derived from MK rulings, several proposals from experts and political parties. What are the points? They already reach about 300 pages,’ he added.
