Jakarta – Mafirion, a member of Commission XIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives, has strongly condemned the acid attack against Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for Disappeared Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras).

He views the attack on this activist not merely as ordinary criminal conduct, but rather as an act of terror that threatens civil liberties and democracy.

“This is a form of terror that directly attacks civil liberties and democracy,” Mafirion stated when contacted on Saturday, 14 March 2026.

He argued that attacks on activists such as Andrie Yunus do not target individuals alone but also threaten to intimidate citizens who wish to voice criticism.

“I regard the acid attack on activists as a serious violation of human rights, because it targets the right to personal safety, bodily integrity, and freedom of expression guaranteed by the constitution as well as various national and international legal instruments,” he explained.

According to him, such acts of violence must not be left without serious investigation by law enforcement authorities.

The legislator from Riau urged law enforcement to thoroughly investigate the perpetrators and to trace any possible intellectual actors behind the attack.

“If such attacks are allowed to continue, then the state is sending a very dangerous message: that anyone who speaks critically can be silenced by violence,” he added.

Additionally, Mafirion also demanded that the state provide maximum protection to activists and human rights defenders.

For Mafirion, democracy must not succumb to terror and the state must not be defeated by violence that seeks to silence the critical voices of society.

“As a member of society, I stand with activists and all citizens fighting for justice. Remember, violence must not become a tool to silence the voices of the people,” Mafirion stated firmly.

Previously, the acid attack on Kontras Deputy Coordinator Andrie Yunus was confirmed by Dimas Bagus Arya, Coordinator of the Working Body of the Commission for Disappeared Persons and Victims of Violence.

Subsequently, the Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police also confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway.
