DPR Member Calls for Rigorous Oversight of Sacrificial Animal Trade Amid FMD and LSD Threats
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Fourth Commission member of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Daniel Johan, has emphasised the importance of monitoring sacrificial animal trade ahead of Eid al-Adha 2026 due to threats from Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD).
“The oversight of sacrificial animal trade must not be lax to maintain public trust and health,” Daniel stated on Monday (25 May 2026).
The PKB (National Awakening Party) politician also called on the central government and local authorities (Pemda) to strengthen integrated monitoring of the movement and trade of sacrificial animals.
“Monitoring cannot rely solely on administrative checks via animal health certificates; it must involve active and measurable field inspections. Careless oversight could harm the public,” Daniel added.
He also stressed the need to evaluate the readiness of regional livestock agencies to handle the national surge in sacrificial animal distribution.
Daniel assessed that the threats of FMD and LSD highlight weak livestock distribution oversight.
“The FMD and LSD threats have widespread impacts on national animal health and the economic stability of rural farmers. Therefore, anticipatory measures must be taken seriously,” he said.
Daniel further highlighted the low public literacy regarding indicators of healthy sacrificial animals.
The government, through relevant agencies, should expand public education on identifying healthy animals, verifying the authenticity of animal health certificates, and purchasing from officially monitored sales points.
Daniel insisted that the DPR will ensure attention to issues in sacrificial animal trade does not end with seasonal responses during Eid al-Adha.
“This must be part of a broader evaluation of livestock management, food security, and consumer protection to ensure the public receives healthy, appropriate sacrificial animals that comply with religious principles and national health standards,” he said.
