DPR Member Affirms Fuel Price Stability as Correct Step to Safeguard National Economy

Jakarta, VIVA – Jamaludin Malik, a member of Commission XII of the Indonesian House of Representatives from the Golkar Party faction, has voiced his support for the statement by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, who assured that fuel prices will remain stable from 1 April 2026, particularly for types of fuel widely used by the public. According to Jamaludin, the government’s step is the right policy in maintaining public purchasing power amid pressures from global oil prices still above USD 100 per barrel. He views the certainty conveyed by the ESDM Minister as a strong signal that the government is present to protect the public from the impacts of global volatility. “We fully support the ESDM Minister’s statement assuring stable fuel prices. This is a strategic step that demonstrates the government’s concern for the public while safeguarding national economic stability,” Jamaludin stated in his remarks on Wednesday, 1 April 2026. He added that this policy reflects the government’s ability to manage the energy sector adaptively and measurably, including through subsidy and compensation instruments, so that global pressures are not fully passed on domestically. On the other hand, Jamaludin also aligns with the ESDM Minister’s explanation that for non-subsidised fuels, the pricing mechanism still follows market dynamics. In his view, this approach is important to maintain a balance between public protection and national fiscal sustainability. “The approach taken by the government is already correct, where the public remains protected, while the market mechanism continues to operate for the non-subsidiary sector. This shows a balanced and measured policy,” he continued. Furthermore, he encouraged the government to continue strengthening national energy resilience through increasing domestic production, optimising oil and gas lifting, and accelerating energy substitution programmes such as the development of biofuel. In his opinion, the step to maintain fuel price stability needs to be accompanied by long-term efforts so that Indonesia becomes increasingly independent in the energy sector and is not easily affected by global fluctuations. “Support for this policy also needs to be accompanied by strengthening production and energy diversification. Thus, national energy resilience will be increasingly solid in the future,” Jamaludin remarked. It is known that the ESDM Minister, Bahlil Lahadalia, has assured that the government will not adjust fuel prices, either for subsidised or non-subsidised fuels.
