In response to Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Services Yusril Ihza Mahendra, Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives Saan Mustopa emphasised that discussions on the Election Bill (RUU Pemilu) will be conducted at the right time.

“We are still in the study phase, listening to all parties. But once again, the DPR will start at the appropriate and precise time,” Saan said when met at the DPR Building in Senayan, Jakarta, on Friday (1/5/2026).

“In this regard, factions or parties are certainly conducting extensive studies related to the Election Bill,” Saan added.

Furthermore, the DPR also needs to synchronise the substance of the bill with various Constitutional Court (MK) rulings related to elections.

“There are many Constitutional Court rulings that must be synchronised,” he said.

“The DPR considers all aspects so that the future Election Bill is truly comprehensive and all aspects related to electoral matters will be discussed in greater depth,” he continued.

“But certainly, before those important stages, we will definitely discuss it,” he concluded.

It was previously reported that Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Services Yusril Ihza Mahendra stated that the government is open to becoming the party submitting the draft revision of the General Elections Law (RUU Pemilu).

Yusril mentioned that the government is ready to negotiate to become the proposer of the Election Bill draft if the preparation process in the House of Representatives (DPR) is at a standstill.

“If, for example, after one and a half or two and a half years it still hasn’t been completed, then there’s no harm in renegotiating who will submit the draft,” Yusril said when met after attending a UN training event in East Jakarta on Wednesday (29/4/2026).

“I don’t yet know the latest developments, but the government is still waiting for the draft prepared by the DPR to date,” he added.

He stated that from the beginning, the government and the DPR agreed that the preparation of the Bill on Amendments to the General Elections Law would be the initiative of the DPR.

“Indeed, the agreement between the government and the DPR is that the discussion of the Bill on Amendments to the General Elections Law is handed over to the DPR, and it has not been completed until now,” Yusril said.

The Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Moon and Star Party (PBB) added that the government has so far only conducted an inventory of issues related to election implementation.

According to him, if the bill’s initiative is with the DPR, the government will prepare a list of problem inventories (DIM) after the draft is completed. However, if the initiative is shifted to the government, the government must prepare the Election Bill draft independently.
