JAKARTA - Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal stated that the people’s welfare must be protected through justice for workers.

This is reflected in the various aspirations voiced during the International Labour Day or May Day 2026 actions.

“The aspirations brought by fellow workers in the May Day 2026 action show that the people’s welfare must be protected through justice for workers,” said Cucun in his official statement on Friday (1/5/2026).

According to him, workers’ demands cannot be viewed merely as industrial relations issues but are directly related to the broader conditions of society.

“Because the pressures felt by workers today directly affect families’ ability to maintain their basic needs,” he said.

Therefore, Cucun assured that the DPR is ready to champion various workers’ demands to improve workers’ welfare.

One of them is through the discussion of the Employment Bill (RUU Ketenagakerjaan), which will be conducted after the recess period.

“The Employment Bill will be discussed by the DPR in the session period after this recess,” he revealed.

In the May Day 2026 actions, workers conveyed 11 demands, including the abolition of outsourcing, rejection of low wages, and anticipation of potential mass layoffs (PHK) due to global dynamics.

Cucun reminded that labour issues are directly linked to the economic and social conditions of society.

Job uncertainty, he said, will have a broad impact on family life.

“Labour issues are directly linked to the economic and social life of society. When jobs become uncertain, the impact does not stop at individual income but affects family welfare simultaneously,” stated Cucun.

“From families’ ability to balance basic needs, the continuity of children’s education, to access to healthcare services,” he said.

“Happy International Labour Day 2026 to all workers in Indonesia. All workers, whether in the formal or informal sectors, permanent workers or daily or seasonal workers, deserve protection and welfare guarantees,” he concluded.
