DPR Intervenes Amid Uproar Over Tokopedia Layoff Reports

The House of Representatives (DPR) has intervened following the uproar over layoff reports at Tokopedia last week. Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad held a meeting with representatives from TikTok and Tokopedia, along with Manpower Minister Yassierli, on Monday (6/7/2026). Dasco explained that his office had taken note of viral issues, including the layoff issue affecting TikTok and Tokopedia employees. His office subsequently facilitated a meeting between the company and the ministry. “Today I facilitated a meeting; we invited representatives from both TikTok in China and TikTok in Indonesia, which acquired Tokopedia. Earlier, together with the Manpower Minister, we held a dialogue,” Dasco said during a press conference. On that occasion, Executive Director of Tokopedia and TikTok Shop Indonesia Stephanie Susilo denied reports of layoffs occurring at the company. According to her, what took place was corporate restructuring and internal mobility. However, some employees chose to leave the company under this programme. They opted to work elsewhere or were channelled into the TikTok and Tokopedia group business ecosystem. “Firstly, there is no termination of employment at TikTok or Tokopedia Group. What is happening is a workforce restructuring that we are carrying out and internal mobility within the TikTok or Tokopedia Group,” she clarified. “In this restructuring programme, there are indeed those who have chosen to take a compensation package and choose to work elsewhere or be channelled within the TikTok Tokopedia group business ecosystem,” she added. Stephanie explained that the company is opening recruitment for more than 100 positions in Indonesia. Manpower Minister Yassierli expressed appreciation for the restructuring within the company. He explained that this allows employees to continue working within the TikTok and Tokopedia Group ecosystem. “Because we know the TikTok Group certainly has several lines of business, and this also provides opportunities for workers to then work in other lines of business,” Yassierli said. Previously, reports circulated that 90% of Tokopedia employees were dismissed last week. A CNBC Indonesia source said more than 450 employees in the technology unit were affected by this decision. The wave of layoffs left approximately 10% of the 2,500 employees since Tokopedia was acquired by TikTok from GoTo. The remaining employees are only in the business, trust and safety, and technology units.
