Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Sufmi Dasco Ahmad held a meeting with representatives from the digital platform company TikTok, both from China and Indonesia, to address the issue of layoffs affecting its employees in Indonesia. Dasco revealed that the layoff issue had been widely discussed on social media, prompting him to facilitate a meeting between TikTok representatives and the Ministry of Manpower. “We invited representatives from TikTok in China and TikTok’s representatives in Indonesia who acquired Tokopedia, and we also had a discussion with the Minister of Manpower, Mr. Yassierli,” Dasco said at the parliament complex in Jakarta on Monday. Following the meeting, TikTok stated that there was no complete termination of employment. According to Dasco, TikTok, which acquired Tokopedia, is currently undergoing an internal corporate restructuring. He also clarified that the report of 1,250 employees being laid off by TikTok was inaccurate, stating that only around 200 employees had taken a compensation package related to the internal restructuring. “There are also those who have taken compensation but were then channelled into TikTok’s other group companies,” Dasco added. Furthermore, he dismissed any issue regarding the transfer of Indonesian employees to work in China, noting that TikTok has made a substantial investment in Indonesia. “So indeed, Tokopedia was acquired by TikTok Shop, which has many business lines,” Dasco concluded.
