DPR Haji Oversight Panel member Nihayatul Wafiroh has highlighted the insufficient number of healthcare workers for the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage. The PKB politician, also serving as a member of the DPR’s Commission IX, stated that current healthcare staffing for Hajj is approximately 1,200 personnel. ‘Given that over 30% of each group consists of elderly, disabled, or high-risk pilgrims, healthcare workers face immense pressure,’ she said.

Nihayatul noted that healthcare demands have risen due to new Saudi hospital policies requiring medical attendants for patients. ‘Previously, patients referred to hospitals did not need a healthcare worker to accompany them. Now, two patients require one attendant, severely straining our medical staff,’ she added.

She also pointed out inadequate specialist availability at KKHI Madinah, with fewer internal medicine specialists than previous years, leading to delayed consultations and irregular daily visits. Additionally, only one mental health specialist is available for KKHI and the sector in Madinah.

Nihayatul urged an increase in healthcare staff per Hajj group, stating each should have at least three personnel. ‘Despite health assessments being implemented, stricter Puskeshaji supervision, and technology use, on-the-ground conditions show pilgrims’ health burdens remain high and are unlikely to significantly improve within five years,’ she said.
