DPR Expects New BI Governor to Be Skilled in Building Coordination with Stakeholders

A member of the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission XI, Martin Manurung, stated that the new Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) must have a proven track record in executing monetary policy and be capable of optimising BI’s role in stabilisation. In addition, the governor must have the capability to implement a policy mix to support national economic growth. “The BI Governor must be able to communicate policies effectively amidst global and domestic economic dynamics, so that the policies receive a positive market response,” Martin said in a statement cited on Sunday (9/8). The government is reportedly set to propose a candidate for the BI Governor to the DPR in the coming weeks. However, the NasDem Party legislator declined to speculate on the names of candidates, including Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti, who is rumoured to be appointed as the definitive BI Governor replacing Perry Warjiyo. Martin only expressed hope that the new BI Governor would be able to fulfil the full mandate of the Bank Indonesia Law and the Financial Sector Development and Strengthening Law (UU P2SK). He also stressed that the new BI Governor must be adept at building coordination with all stakeholders in the Financial System Stability Committee (KSSK) without blurring the lines of BI’s independence. Under Law Number 23 of 1999 concerning Bank Indonesia, the process of appointing a BI Governor candidate involves the President and the DPR. The President proposes the candidate for governor and senior deputy governor for approval by the DPR. In the event of a vacancy, the President appoints a new official according to the initial proposal mechanism. Under the provisions of Law Number 4 of 2026, the President may appoint a replacement for the remainder of the term or for a full five-year term. If a replacement governor has not been appointed, the senior deputy governor acts as the interim governor.
