DPR confirms Asset Forfeiture Bill still under discussion
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR RI) has affirmed that deliberations on the Asset Forfeiture Bill are still ongoing, following information circulating on social media claiming that Parliament had rejected the enactment of the legislation.
“It is not true that there are hoaxes in the media, mostly from anonymous accounts, saying that the DPR rejected the passage of the Asset Forfeiture Bill,” said Habiburokhman, Chairman of Commission III of the DPR RI, during a public hearing on the Asset Forfeiture Bill at the DPR Building in Jakarta on Monday.
He explained that to date, the DPR has heard the aspirations of at least 24 elements of society, including university students, experts, and civil society organisations. Meetings to gather input will continue to be held.
“The fact is that over three session periods we have been pushing ahead with public hearings and discussing the formation of this bill,” he said.
The Asset Forfeiture Bill represents new regulation in Indonesia’s legal order that has never previously been governed by law.
For that reason, Habib said, deliberating the draft takes time in order to receive input from various parties.
“Even with other bills that are amendments, such as the Criminal Procedure Code and the National Police Law, which do not have many articles under discussion, we conducted public hearings for quite a long time — let alone with a bill that we are forming from scratch,” he said.
Nevertheless, Habiburokhman affirmed that Commission III of the DPR RI would accelerate the deliberation of the Asset Forfeiture Bill.
“I stress again, it is not true that the DPR has rejected it. On the contrary, we are charging ahead with turbo to form this law,” he said.
Previously, Martin Manurung, Vice Chairman of the DPR’s Legislative Body, also affirmed that the narrative claiming the Asset Forfeiture Bill had been removed from the 2026 Priority National Legislation Programme (Prolegnas) was untrue, otherwise a hoax.
“There has been no decision by a DPR plenary meeting to remove the Asset Forfeiture Bill from the 2026 Priority Prolegnas,” Martin said in a written statement on Saturday (11 July).
He explained that the bill remains listed in the 2026 Priority Prolegnas at number six, as a proposal from the DPR RI. The Asset Forfeiture Bill is being prepared by Commission III of the DPR RI.
“The Asset Forfeiture Bill has been agreed upon in the Prolegnas by the DPR and the government. This means the DPR and the government are committed to drafting this bill as well as possible and involving public participation in the formulation of its norms,” he said.
