Jakarta, Kompas.com - Vice Chairman of DPR Commission XIII Andreas Hugo Pareira has emphasised that the revision of the Human Rights Law (UU HAM) must not compromise the independence of the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM).

Andreas stated that concerns raised by Komnas HAM Chairman Anis Hidayah regarding potential power interference in the revised UUU HAM draft need to be addressed to prevent such occurrences.

‘The points raised by Komnas HAM’s chairman about threats to independence and space for intervention must be anticipated to avoid this happening,’ Andreas said on Thursday, 28 May 2026.

‘Komnas HAM’s independence must be safeguarded free from power interference to effectively carry out its duties in protecting and preventing human rights violations,’ he added.

The PDI-P politician further noted that, as of now, the revised UUU HAM draft has not yet been submitted to DPR Commission XIII for discussion.

Andreas suspects the draft is currently being deliberated internally among government ministries and agencies.

Previously, Komnas HAM Chairman Anis Hidayah stated that the Human Rights Law draft prepared by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights weakens Komnas HAM’s tasks and independence.

‘The draft law undermines Komnas HAM’s tasks and authority through several provisions,’ Anis said in a written statement on Tuesday, 26 May 2026.
