DPR Commission X Demands SOP Evaluation Following Mass Food Poisoning in Sidoarjo
The Deputy Chairman of Commission X of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Lalu Hadrian, has highlighted the incident where hundreds of students at the Manbaul Hikam Islamic Boarding School in Tanggul Angin, Sidoarjo, were allegedly poisoned after consuming the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) menu. Lalu has requested that the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) be evaluated.
“This is certainly a shared concern, but we suggest that the management of the free nutritious meals continues. Today, we see the new Head of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) is constantly striving to ensure that governance becomes increasingly better,” said Lalu Hadrian at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday (2/9/2026).
Lalu stated that the management of the Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG) in the area must be evaluated. He reminded that not even a single student should fall victim to MBG poisoning.
“However, since such incidents are still occurring, there are things that must be evaluated and addressed, so that far from dozens or hundreds, not even one person should be affected, let alone suffer from poisoning due to poor processes or management,” he expressed.
Commission X of the DPR RI has requested an evaluation following the incident. He noted that the good objectives of the MBG programme must be accompanied by structured implementation in the field.
“Please evaluate and improve the SOPs; we in Commission X encourage that these incidents do not happen again to other schools in Indonesia. This programme is very good; whoever is involved in its success must ensure it runs strictly according to the established SOPs,” he said.
SPPG Suspended
It is reported that hundreds of students at the Manbaul Hikam Islamic Boarding School, Tanggul Angin, Sidoarjo, were allegedly poisoned after eating the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) menu. The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) stated that the number of poisoned students reached 512 people.
“Based on the data we received from colleagues conducting field investigations, a total of 512 people were exposed or affected,” said the Deputy for Monitoring and Supervision at the BGN, Ketut Sumedana, in a statement on Wednesday (2/9/2026).
As of the report, 80 students remain under hospital care, while 312 others have been discharged and declared recovered. Meanwhile, 120 individuals are still under observation.
Ketut stated that the BGN has conducted an investigation in collaboration with the relevant Health Office. The Talang Angin Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG) has been suspended under a heavy category.
“First, we are conducting an investigation with the relevant Health Office, and the results regarding the cause of the poisoning will be announced later,” he said.
“Furthermore, we have imposed a heavy-category suspension for 30 days on the Sidoarjo Talang Angin SPPG,” he added.
