DPR Commission X Calls for Clear Implementation Plan for French Language in Schools
DPR Commission X Chair Hetifah responded to President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to teach French in Indonesian schools, stating that a clear implementation plan is needed for how French will be taught. ‘We certainly support the government’s efforts to enhance students’ foreign language skills as preparation for global competition. However, regarding the President’s directive to expand French language learning, there must be clarity on its implementation in schools, especially since the strengthening of English as a compulsory subject is only being rolled out this year,’ Hetifah told reporters on Saturday, 30 May 2026. Hetifah highlighted the readiness of French language teachers, stating she does not want schools burdened by the policy due to insufficient teaching staff. ‘Attention must be paid to educational resource readiness, particularly the availability and competence of teachers. Schools should not be burdened with new policies without adequate teaching staff and sufficient learning facilities,’ she said. She noted that foreign language teaching methods should be engaging and enjoyable to ensure students are receptive. ‘Foreign language instruction must be made engaging and enjoyable for students. Approaches using conversation, games, music, films, culture, and digital technology will be more effective than methods overly focused on rote memorisation and theory,’ she added. Teacher quality, Hetifah said, is another crucial factor. She urged the government to ensure policies are realistic and aligned with students’ needs. ‘We believe the success of foreign language learning is not determined by the number of languages taught, but by teaching quality, teacher readiness, and student interest. Therefore, the government must ensure policies are implemented gradually, realistically, and focused on students’ needs,’ she added. Previously, Prabowo stated he had instructed all Indonesian schools to teach French to students, citing future global developments as the reason. This was stated by Prabowo during his visit to the Élysée Presidential Palace in Paris on Thursday, 28 May, in front of Macron. ‘I have now instructed that all levels of schools in Indonesia must learn French, given future global developments,’ Prabowo said.
