DPR Commission V Urges Government to Anticipate Tidal Flooding Risks During Eid Period
The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has predicted potential tidal flooding (rob) in coastal areas during the Eid holiday period. The DPR’s Commission V has requested that the government prepare mitigation measures to prevent disasters from occurring.
“Disasters are certainly difficult to predict with certainty as to when and where they will occur, however, for vulnerable points that have already been identified, the government should be able to take preventive steps,” said Commission V Chair Lasarus to reporters on Friday (13 March 2026).
The PDIP politician stated that preventive measures that can be prepared include readiness of facilities and infrastructure, as well as deployment of personnel.
“(Preventive steps) Include both preparation of facilities and infrastructure as well as personnel readiness in case disasters occur in vulnerable points that have already been mapped by the government,” he said.
Tidal Flooding Potential in Coastal Areas During Eid
Earlier, BMKG Head Teuku Faisal Fathani reported the potential for tidal flooding during the Eid period. Tidal flooding is caused by a new moon and the lunar perigee phenomenon.
“There is potential for tidal flooding caused by a new moon on 19 March as well as the lunar perigee phenomenon, where the moon is closest to the earth on 22 March,” said Teuku Faisal during a meeting discussing infrastructure and transport service readiness for the 2026 Eid exodus with Commission V DPR in Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday (11 March).
He stated that tidal flooding has potential to occur in Indonesia’s coastal areas. As a result of this phenomenon, sea levels are expected to rise, causing tidal flooding.
“This has the potential to increase maximum sea water levels, so there is potential for tidal flooding in coastal areas across Indonesia,” he said.
