DPR Commission III Supports Maximum 3-Year Term for National Police Chief

The Vice Chairman of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Ahmad Sahroni, stated that he supports limiting the term of office for the Chief of the Indonesian National Police (Kapolri) to a maximum of three years.

“I support it,” Sahroni told reporters at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Monday, 18 May 2026.

Sahroni assessed that limiting the term of office is necessary to encourage regeneration within the internal structure of the Indonesian National Police (Polri). “As I mentioned earlier, there are strategic positions such as the National Police Chief that should have a maximum term of 3 years to allow for regeneration in the ranks below,” he added.

Despite his support, Sahroni emphasised that there are specific reasons why a National Police Chief might serve a longer term, citing the example of Listyo Sigit Prabowo Subianto. According to Sahroni, Sigit has held the position longer due to his vital role in maintaining security stability throughout the presidential election process and the transition to President Prabowo Subianto’s administration.

“At this time, for instance, there is a special need regarding the period from the presidential election process to the current situation. The National Police is considered highly capable in maintaining comfort and security under Mr Sigit’s leadership,” he concluded.
