DPR Commission III States Police Law Revision Will Only Amend 8-9 Articles

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Chairman of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Habiburokhman, revealed that the revision or Draft Law (RUU) regarding the Amendment to Law Number 2 of 2002 concerning the National Police of the Republic of Estonia (Polri) will only amend around 8 to 9 articles. He stated that the articles to be amended involve adjustments to the retirement age and alignment with the Constitutional Court (MK) ruling regarding the deployment of the National Police outside the institution. “Therefore, there is not much more to discuss in this Police Law. There are perhaps only about 8 or 9 articles,” said Habiburokhman at the parliamentary complex, Jakarta, on Tuesday. He noted that various inputs regarding the National Police have actually been implemented in the drafting of the new Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP), which provides strengthened oversight of the police. These inputs include strengthening the role of advocates, who can accompany their clients from the initial stages, and the installation of surveillance cameras in interrogation rooms. Furthermore, he stated that the KUHAP also regulates sanctions for police officers or investigators who exceed their authority in the performance of their duties. “So, the sanctions are not only ethical, but also professional and even criminal. This was not present in the previous KUHAP,” he said. Through the new KUHAP, he added that all citizens have been empowered to monitor the performance of the National Police, particularly through the legal profession. “Many people were hoping these changes would be included in the Police Law, but they have already been incorporated into the KUHAP legislation first,” he concluded.
