DPR Commission II to Visit Political Parties to Gather Input on Election Bill
The Chairman of Commission II of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Bahtra Banong, has emphasised that the commission continues to provide space for public participation in the drafting of the Election Bill. He stated that the goal is for the prepared electoral regulations to truly accommodate various public aspirations and address future democratic challenges.
According to Bahtra, Commission II has reported the progress of the Election Bill discussions to the leadership of the DPR. In this process, the DPR is not relying solely on internal discussions but is actively absorbing input from academics, experts, election activists, and political parties.
“At Commission II, we continue to open space for participation. Just last Tuesday, we invited experts, including Professor Siti Zuhro and many others, to ensure that we keep opening avenues for public participation,” Baarmong stated at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Friday, 5 June 2026.
Bahtra noted that refining the electoral system requires input from various sectors. Therefore, the DPR wishes to ensure that all views emerging within society can serve as considerations in the drafting of the new regulations.
“We want to implement improvements. Naturally, in the pursuit of these improvements, we want the refinement of the Election Bill to enhance both the implementation and the quality of our elections and our democracy,” he said.
Furthermore, Bahtra mentioned that DPR Commission II plans to visit political parties to obtain direct feedback. “In the future, we will even visit political parties to request input, including both those represented in parliament and those outside of parliament,” he added.
Bahtra assessed that the involvement of all stakeholders is crucial to ensure no party feels their aspirations have been ignored during the drafting process of the Election Bill. “We will accommodate all aspirations so that we can cater to both parliamentary and non-parliamentary parties,” he asserted.
