DPR Commission I backs TNI in tackling mugging if police require assistance
Deputy Chairman of DPR Commission I Dave Akbarshah Fikarno Laksono stated that the TNI could handle mugging incidents via a support mechanism should the Indonesian National Police (Polri) require additional assistance to maintain public stability and security. He explained that any involvement must be proportionate, have a clear legal basis, be conducted as per field requirements, and maintain good inter-institutional coordination. ‘The most important thing for the public right now is the tangible presence of the state,’ Dave said in Jakarta on Thursday, 28 May 2026. He stated that public safety and a sense of security are non-negotiable, meaning the state has an obligation to ensure citizens can go about their activities without fear. Dave assessed that TNI involvement must be proportionate and in line with existing regulations. Fundamentally, the TNI’s primary role is national defence, while maintaining public security and order falls under the police’s remit. ‘Therefore, handling criminal acts such as mugging is fundamentally the responsibility of police authorities,’ said the Golkar Party faction member of the DPR. However, Dave stressed that authorities must ensure public safety, crack down on street criminals, and guarantee safe public spaces. Thus, Polri remains the primary agency handling mugging. ‘DPR Commission I supports strengthening inter-agency coordination to safeguard national security and public order, ensuring all actions adhere to legal frameworks and respective jurisdictions,’ he said.
