DPR Commission Chair Calls for State to Cover Medical Costs for KontraS Activist
Jakarta – The head of the House of Representatives’ Commission III, Habiburokhman, has called on the state to cover the full cost of medical treatment for Andrie Yunus, deputy coordinator of KontraS, a human rights organisation.
Yunus sustained 24 per cent burn injuries across parts of his body after being doused with caustic liquid by two unidentified individuals. The attack occurred whilst he was riding a motorcycle on his way home from work.
“We call on the state to fully cover the costs of the best medical treatment so that he can recover quickly,” said Habiburokhman on Saturday, 14 March 2026.
Habiburokhman emphasised that Commission III of the House of Representatives strongly condemns the attack. He stated that the state must not tolerate any form of violence against its citizens.
If differences of opinion arise, the state should not respond with acts of violence.
“Whatever form of disagreement occurs should never be responded to with violence and thuggery,” said Habiburokhman.
Earlier, KontraS Coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya reported that the incident occurred after Andrie Yunus completed a podcast activity at the office of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) in central Jakarta.
According to him, the attack took place around 23.00 local time after Andrie finished recording a podcast episode titled “Remilitarisation and Judicial Review in Indonesia”.
“KontraS Deputy Coordinator Andrie Yunus has been subjected to a caustic chemical attack by an unidentified individual, resulting in serious injuries across his body, particularly on the right and left hands, face, chest, and around the eyes,” said Dimas.
The victim was immediately taken to hospital for medical treatment. Based on medical examination results, Andrie sustained approximately 24 per cent burn injuries from the chemical.
