DPR calls for stronger governance of new student admissions after Unsoed sting operation

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Chairman of Commission X of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) Lalu Hadrian Irfani has said the government needs to strengthen governance of new student admissions at all state universities, responding to the Corruption Eradication Commission’s (KPK) sting operation against the rectorate of Jenderal Soedirman University (Unsoed).

“Such practices must not occur at any higher education institution. Higher education should be a space for meritocracy and social mobility, not a space for transactions that open opportunities for those with greater access or financial means,” he told journalists in Jakarta on Friday.

He conveyed the concern of Commission X of the DPR RI over the sting operation.

“On behalf of Commission X of the DPR RI, we certainly express our concern and deep regret if the alleged manipulation of new student admissions at Jenderal Soedirman University is confirmed to have occurred,” Lalu said.

Lalu stressed that new student admissions must be based on the abilities and achievements of prospective students, not on financial capacity or closeness to certain parties.

“New student admissions must be an objective, transparent, accountable process based on the abilities and achievements of prospective students, not based on the ability to pay or closeness to certain parties,” he said.

He expressed hope that the KPK would investigate the case thoroughly. Commission X of the DPR RI, Lalu added, will seek further explanation from the relevant ministry, namely the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, regarding measures to reform and strengthen governance of new student admissions at all state universities.

“We must not allow problems in new student admissions to damage public trust in higher education institutions,” he said.

Previously, the KPK confirmed it had conducted a sting operation against the rectorate of Unsoed. Those involved included Unsoed Rector Prof. Akhmad Sodiq, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Noor Farid, and Vice Rector for Student Affairs Prof. Norman Arie Prayogo.

The KPK has 1 x 24 hours to determine the status of the parties arrested in the sting operation in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Code.
