DPR and Government to Discuss 2027 Hajj Cost Increase
Chairman of Commission VIII of the House of Representatives (DPR), Marwan Dasopang, has scheduled a working meeting with the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah for Tuesday, 7 July 2026. The meeting will address the cost of organising the 2027 Hajj pilgrimage, which is predicted to increase compared to this year.
Marwan Dasopang stated that the cost increase could be avoided if the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah can convince the Saudi Arabian government to make savings in several budget items. For instance, by utilising empty Hajj aircraft to transport tourists, thereby reducing flight costs.
“Tomorrow we will convey these ideas, we will give a deadline so that we can decide on the Hajj travel costs. As for how much the increase will be, we shall see,” he said at the DPR complex in Jakarta on Monday, 6 July 2026.
The National Awakening Party (PKB) politician noted that a cost increase is difficult to avoid due to rising prices in Saudi Arabia and the weakening of the rupiah against the US dollar. He therefore believes the government needs to formulate a new pattern for determining next year’s Hajj costs. Without a cost increase, pilgrims are at risk of receiving reduced services.
“If the calculation method is the same as last year, the service quality will definitely decline. Unless the Ministry of Hajj can convince the Saudi side to allow some reductions in the organisation of the pilgrimage,” said Marwan.
Minister of Hajj and Umrah Mochamad Irfan Yusuf acknowledged the potential for an increase in the 2027 Hajj Travel Costs (BPIH). However, he has not yet disclosed the nominal amount of the increase.
“There is likely to be an increase in Hajj costs, but we are trying to ensure that if there is an increase, it will not burden our pilgrims,” he said at the Pondok Gede Hajj Dormitory in Jakarta, as quoted on Sunday, 5 July 2026.
According to Irfan, the potential increase is driven by rising cost components for organising the pilgrimage, including avtur prices, service tariffs set by the Saudi Arabian government, and the depreciation of the rupiah against the US dollar.
He added that the Saudi Arabian government has also changed the service category from D to C, which subsequently increases service costs. Going forward, the government will discuss the guidelines for setting the BPIH and the Hajj Travel Costs (Bipih) with Commission VIII of the DPR, which is the ministry’s working partner.
The 2026 Hajj Travel Costs (BPIH) were set at Rp 87.4 million per pilgrim. This cost is Rp 2 million lower than the 2025 BPIH, which was Rp 89.4 million. The 2026 cost was agreed upon by the government and the DPR in a working meeting on Wednesday, 29 October 2025.
