DPR affirms readiness to receive aspirations from 27 August demonstration

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) Puan Maharani has affirmed that the DPR RI is ready to receive aspirations from various elements of society and has urged demonstrators to maintain order, following plans for a demonstration on 27 August 2026 in front of the parliamentary complex in Jakarta.

Puan expressed hope that the demonstration would not cause unrest. She said it would be better if demonstrators also helped maintain order so that the delivery of aspirations could proceed smoothly.

“So, public participation, if they wish to express their input and aspirations, will of course be received at the DPR building,” Puan said in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Puan assured that the DPR would be open to members of the public who wish to convey their aspirations. She said that on Wednesday, DPR leaders, leaders of the council’s auxiliary bodies (AKD), and commission chairs took turns meeting with members of the public who wished to hold audiences.

“DPR leaders can meet with demonstrators. Today, DPR leaders also met with representatives of the public who wished to meet,” she said.

She cited as an example that Commission III of the DPR RI received aspirations from a number of academics regarding the drafting of the Bill on Asset Forfeiture.

In addition, Deputy Speaker of the DPR RI Sufmi Dasco Ahmad also received an audience from representatives of honorary teachers who are members of the Forum Advokasi Guru Non-ASN Sekolah Negeri (Fagri), and employees of PT Pos Indonesia to push for certainty over delayed salary payments.

“We take turns meeting members of the public who wish to meet,” Puan said.

Previously, the Aliansi Masyarakat Pati Bersatu (AMPB) affirmed that the action to be held in front of the DPR RI building in Jakarta on Thursday (27/8) would be peaceful and would focus on two demands related to eradicating corruption.

AMPB coordinator Supriyono, also known as Botok, said the two demands were to immediately pass the Asset Forfeiture Bill and to impose the death penalty on corruptors.

“We have no intention of causing trouble in Jakarta. We support the movement of our friends in Greater Jakarta who will hold the 27 August action,” Botok said when met in Jakarta on Wednesday.
