The Deputy Chairman of the DPD RI Papua Special Committee, Filep Wamafma, has requested that the government openly explain the security status in Papua following statements by TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto regarding the suppression of the OPM.

According to Filep, clarity regarding this status is essential to determine security patterns and to establish protection measures for civilians residing within conflict zones. “So, what is the current status in Papua? This means whether it is a Military Operations Area (DOM) must be determined by the TNI or the government,” said Filep on Monday.

He questioned whether Papua is currently classified as a military operations area or is under a different security status. “Is Papua under a Military Operations status, or how is it?” he asked.

Filep noted that security approaches in Papua would depend heavily on the status established by the government. “Because the security approach in Papua depends on the status. Currently, the approach is focused on development, welfare, and justice,” he stated.

Consequently, he expressed concern that statements regarding ‘suppression’ could impact civilians not involved in the conflict. “If the Commander speaks of suppression, then I worry that innocent civilians will also become victims,” said Filep.

Filep urged the government to announce Papua’s security status to the public. He believes such clarity is vital so that residents in conflict areas can take protective measures. “Therefore, we request that the security status of Papua be announced to the public. This way, innocent civilians can be relocated to much safer areas,” he hoped.

He emphasised that the protection of civilians must be the primary concern if the government intensifies its security approach in Papua. “If suppression occurs as suggested, there is a fear that innocent civilians will become victims. They know nothing, yet they are suspected, and so on,” he said.

Filep concluded by reiterating his demand for the government to transparently explain the security status in Papua. “In my view, the government must announce it. Is the status of Papua a state of war? A military operations area? Or what status is it?” he ended.
