DPD Special Committee Reveals Plight of Displaced Residents in Papua's Puncak Region

The Regional Representative Council’s (DPD) Special Committee on Papua has revealed the precarious situation of hundreds of displaced residents in the Puncak region of Central Papua. The committee chairman, Yorrys Raweyai, stated that the refugees, displaced from the districts of Yugumuak, Oneri, Agandugume, and Lambewi, have lost their livelihoods and farming opportunities. He noted that children are also struggling to access proper education due to the ongoing conflict. Raweyai explained that the residents are unable to return to their homes as the security situation remains volatile, with the continued presence of non-organic troops exacerbating the trauma. The committee has committed to gathering facts on the ground to formulate its work following the recess period. During the visit, the committee provided direct assistance and assured the displaced communities that their aspirations would be followed up. Raweyai emphasised that the state must be present to provide protection and solutions, ensuring the community can live safely, access education and healthcare, and rebuild their lives.
