DPD Special Committee Committed to Finding Solutions for Papua Conflict

The DPD RI Papua Special Committee (Pansus) is committed to presenting solutions to the security and humanitarian conflict issues in Papua in an objective, comprehensive, and fair manner.

Chairman of the DPD Papua Special Committee, Yorrys Raweyai, stated that the committee is currently inventorying various issues in Papua, primarily related to alleged human rights violations and issues surrounding National Strategic Projects (PSN).

“The Special Committee has held its first meeting to inventory all problems in Papua, and will subsequently invite ministries, agencies, or other stakeholders to engage in dialogue together,” Yorrys said during a press conference following a meeting with the National Commission on Human Rights at the parliamentary complex, Jakarta, on Thursday.

The working visit aims to assess the conditions of regions directly impacted by conflict issues. The Special Committee will conduct in-depth studies with various layers of society to obtain necessary data and documents.

Yorrys explained that the Special Committee will work systematically through multi-stakeholder collaboration. The committee’s findings will eventually take the form of recommendations addressed directly to the government.

These recommendations are part of the DPD’s constitutional responsibility to advocate for regional interests. Consequently, the DPD Papua Special Committee will monitor the process until the recommendations are genuinely implemented.

The committee will continue to push for regulations and policies that bring real impact to victims and their families, regarding recovery, legal certainty, and guarantees to ensure such events do not recur.

He added that the Special Committee has six months to work, with the possibility of an extension depending on the situation. The formation of the Special Committee was agreed upon during the DPD plenary session last May.

“Our hope is that with this good start, and with our shared intentions and the same spirit of idealism, let us resolve the [conflict issues in] Papua within the context of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI),” he concluded.
