DPD RI Educates High School Students in Manokwari to Prevent Integrity Crisis
Manokwari — The Chairman of Committee III of the DPD RI, Filep Wamafa, has educated high school students in Manokwari Regency, West Papua, on the importance of implementing character education from an early age as an effort to prevent an integrity crisis.
This was conveyed by Filep while serving as a speaker during the ‘Gebyar Ceria Ramaja’ camping activity for the Manokkwari area, themed ‘Creating, Serving, and Achieving’, held in Manokwari on Friday.
According to him, current developments in information technology must be balanced with the strengthening of character education, so that students are able to avoid various potential behavioural deviations in the future. The formation of an integrous character, he stated, must begin within educational institutions, as students are the nation’s next generation and future leaders who will determine the direction of development.
“Character education in Papua as a whole is currently beginning to fade, even though education is extremely important in determining the future direction of the younger generation,” he said.
According to Filep, extracurricular activities such as camping that accommodate character education concepts should be organised continuously by all educational institutions in Manokwari. Local governments are expected to not only focus on implementing free education programmes or improving infrastructure but also to ensure that students possess discipline, honesty, resilience, and competitiveness.
As Chairman of Committee III, he will hold a meeting with the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education to discuss the character education curriculum for the Papua region. The formulation of educational policies at the central government level needs to consider the regional characteristics, socio-culture, politics, and economy of each area, especially Papua.
“Therefore, there should be what is known as affirmative policy. I hope local governments are concerned with implementing continuous extracurricular activities,” he said.
He noted that the Gebyar Ceria camp serves as a platform for character building, expanding horizons, and strengthening the participants’ spirit to continue learning and achieving their goals towards ‘Indonesia Emas 2045’. He added that an individual’s success is not determined solely by possessing a diploma, but also by the quality of knowledge and skills acquired through a serious learning process.
