DPD RI Chairman Sultan Najamudin received Russian Senator Ilyas Umakhanov. The meeting discussed a number of matters, including education cooperation.

“We from the leadership and several members of DPD RI have just received Senator Ilyas. Senator Ilyas is a senator from Russia, a special envoy, and one of the most experienced politicians in Russia. He is now the chairman of the committee overseeing education, religion, and culture,” Sultan said after the meeting at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday (20/8/2026).

Sultan noted that this agenda was a reciprocal visit following his meeting with the Chair of Russia’s Federation Council, Valentina Matvienko. In the meeting with Ilyas, Sultan said they discussed education cooperation, given that Russia is increasingly popular among Indonesian students.

“Russia is one of the countries that is greatly sought after by young people, students, and female students who wish to study there. Because the education is extraordinary, and science is developing very rapidly,” he said.

During the meeting, according to Sultan, Ilyas outlined technological developments in Russia. Sultan said his side would facilitate education cooperation with the relevant committee.

“He even mentioned IT, science, robotics, nuclear, and so on. That is also what we will agree upon,” he said.

“The interest is actually growing day by day. We will facilitate it with the relevant committee, and that has been underpinned by a very good agreement,” he added.

Meanwhile, Ilyas expressed appreciation for the DPD’s welcome. Ilyas said Sultan’s meeting with Matvienko was productive and resulted in a memorandum.

“The memorandum contains many provisions regarding cooperation between Russia and Indonesia in various fields,” Ilyas said.
