DPD partners with BRIN and ICMI to prepare artificial intelligence regulations
Bengkulu (ANTARA) - The Regional Representative Council (DPD) of the Republic of Indonesia is partnering with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Indonesian Muslim Scholars Association (ICMI) to conduct research and studies aimed at proposing a Bill on Artificial Intelligence.
“As a legislative institution, the leadership of the DPD RI feels it is necessary to collaborate with research institutions and civil society organisations that focus on the formulation of national policy,” said the Chairman of the DPD RI, Sultan Baktiar Najamudin, via an electronic statement received in Bengkulu on Tuesday.
According to Sultan, BRIN and ICMI possess the capacity and experience required for evidence-based policy formulation.
The planned cooperation was announced after Sultan received a visit from the Head of BRIN, who also serves as the General Chair of ICMI, Arif Satria, at the DPD RI Office in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday (21/9).
The institutional cooperation between the three entities will subsequently be formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
Sultan stated that rapid technological developments and global dynamics have created a need for policies that the state cannot yet fully address. One such area, he noted, is the advancement of artificial intelligence, which has transformed various economic and social patterns within society.
“Therefore, together with BRIN and ICMI, we believe the state needs to regulate AI so that it does not become a disaster for the nation’s civilisation,” he said.
Sultan added that the government needs to pay special attention to the massive development of artificial intelligence, as the technology has brought changes to various societal activities. While AI provides conveniences in the workforce and other sectors, he warned that without constitutional control, it could pose a threat and cause social crises in the future.
He further stated that the DPD RI will strive to involve BRIN and ICMI in every study related to the drafting of Bills initiated by the institution. According to Sultan, the involvement of research institutions and civil society organisations is necessary to fulfil the principle of meaningful participation and to enrich perspectives during the legislative process.
“Involving research institutions and civil society organisations is not only to satisfy the principle of meaningful participation, but to ensure that the DPD RI obtains a more complete scientific perspective in every legislative process that does not conflict with the religious values and culture of the Indonesian nation,” he concluded.
