DPD Forms Special Committee to Address Conflict and Humanitarian Issues in Papua

Jakarta – The Regional Representative Council (DPD RI) has formed a Special Committee (Pansus) for the Handling of Conflict and Humanitarian Issues in Papua. The Pansus is chaired by DPD RI Deputy Speaker Yorrys Raweyai.

Yorrys stated that the situation in several areas of Papua remains volatile. He highlighted the number of civilian casualties resulting from the conflict.

“In less than a week, there have been several quite prominent incidents there that concern us all, starting with the killing of several residents,” Yorrys said during a press conference at the Parliament Complex in Central Jakarta on Monday, 6 July 2026.

“Then their bodies were found behind the regent’s office, and most recently, a pilot from a missionary flight there,” he added.

Meanwhile, DPD RI member and Pansus member, Eka Kristina Yeimo, explained that this Pansus will focus on the security and comfort issues of the Papuan people, which have been disrupted by the conflict.

“By acts of violence committed by any party suspected of involvement, whether from the TNI/Polri apparatus, Armed Criminal Groups (KKB), or civilians,” said Eka.

The DPD stated that this series of events cannot be allowed to continue. Eka emphasised that the central government, regional governments, and legislators must immediately address the issue.

“The DPD RI Papua Pansus also seeks to bridge the concerns and anxieties of the Papuan people regarding rights they feel have been violated and not properly accommodated,” Eka said.
